Coaching

Coaching can be a valuable intervention when you are feeling stuck, seeking a way forward, yet can’t quite see the wood for the trees. It is predominantly future-focused, helping you to release the answers that lie within. There are many coaches out there and the quest to find someone suitable can feel quite daunting. The Safe House provides an introduction to a reputable coach, however, there are other avenues you can explore.

Daniel Berrio Galan

Daniel is a local GP who also runs Second Mountain CoachingTM. He believes that finding the right coach for you can be key to reaching successful outcomes so offers a free 30minute discovery session to find out if you’re the right fit for each other. Further sessions can be arranged following on from this, at an agreed cost.

You will see that Daniel predominantly works with a male client base, but he is more than capable of helping anyone who feels that a coaching intervention might suit their current needs and is keen to support anyone working within primary care in Somerset.

Kevin Chamberlain

Kevin Chamberlain is a professional coach who has worked alongside the LMC for some years. His original involvement in Somerset was as an acting practice manager, and freelance consultant for the then Somerset Family Health Services Authority. He represented the interests of GPs and Dentists for a number of years on the Training and Enterprise Council. A registered coach, he works he works with major financial companies, worldwide consultancies and international recruitment companies.

He conducts all his coaching virtually, with an initial meeting followed by additional sessions as agreed, at a cost of around £60 per hour. Coaching sessions are typically around an hour, though the initial session may be a little longer.

 

Examples of Coaching Interventions

Brian

Brian initially described himself as ‘a leader just needing a little bit of re-motivating.’ It became clear, on meeting, that the issues were around Brian’s age, and a sense of being tired and overtaken by others. He was concerned about the quality of some of his work and his relationships were generally poor. We explored both the reality of his experience and potential areas for development, set goals, and a clear vision for the future that he could, and most importantly, wanted, to create. With a renewed sense of who he really was, and what he had to offer, Brian was able to say that he no longer felt ‘stuck’ and whilst the demands of the work meant he often felt tired, his stress levels had dropped, and he no longer felt overwhelmed when making decisions. No longer feeling threatened by others, his relationships also improved.

Janet

Janet was five years into her career, and feeling quite unhappy. ‘I have pretty much been on a train track since school and now I know I need to be doing something different, the question is what, or am I just mad?’ Janet was not mad, but she did need to undertake a serious review of her life and career. We worked together to explore her strengths and skills and to meet people in other work. We refreshed her C.V. and worked on her interview and presentation skills. With new-found confidence Janet made the changes she needed to make and currently reports herself as being very happy with life.

How to find the right coach for you

  • Make sure a coach is what you’re after (rather than a therapist or a mentor)
  • Determine if they are thoroughly trained & certified
  • Ask them about their coaching style
  • Ask what methodologies and tools they use
  • Figure out what it will cost
  • Do a consultation with the coach – most offer a free initial session
  • Determine their availability
  • Assess their successes and results
  • Evaluate the experience of interacting with them – did you feel comfortable?
